Sweet Suite

Sweets to make a suite! And to make any small girl’s eyes shine. The biscuit furniture in this stop motion animation is not only iced; it can move around on its own.

This is a still from a stop motion animation Anita Bacic and I made on her mobile phone. The furniture is made from biscuits that have been iced and decorated. This started out as a fun diversion, but has since turned into a massive project ...

We've decided to do a series of little stop motion animations that are delivered to people's mobile phones in episodes at site specific locations in different cities. Four films will make up the series. The content of each will reference early film history in Australia and the links between film and circus in these years. Each film is linked by content and the mediums used - crochet, icing, sweets, cake and cardboard.

We've called the project "Roaming Sweets". It's a location-based treasure hunt. The first location will be advertised and the location for receiving the second episode will be publicised at the first one, and so on. The catalogue, like the films, is collected from each location.

The first showing will be in Brisbane as part of a show at Raw Space Galleries in September 2006.

Fun in the sun

This "fun in the sun" t-shirt is by far the best garment in the bags of clothes India found. I wish I'd had it for the car scene in Grots to the show.

Gran and Pop

Here are the grandparents. I made Gran's dress. Pop is half-dressed in one of the jumpers India found on the street. I have to make him some pants and slippers.

The dolls

These are the kids' outfits from the car / sugar cane scene in Grots to the show. For the new work I am using the same dolls but different outfits. In this work it is bedtime and quite cold so they need a wardrobe change.

For Grots I made all of the clothing that the dolls wear. This time though a friend found two bags of discarded dolls' clothing on the street. And some of it fits my dolls! I have got one and a half outfits this way - and they are knits to boot!

This is one of the outfits. I don't have to make anything else for this doll which I'm relieved about.

Heart shaped leaves and crocheted flowers

These are some of the plants I'm making for the patio set. The blue crocheted flowers will move about in the wind. The brown croched lines are stalks for a plant and will curl up towards the window sill. The brown love hearts are made from felt and are tropical leaves for the garden.

I just tried to put wire in the brown crocheted stalks so I can animate them. Discovered the wire is visible when I do this, so think I'll cover it with masking tape that is coloured in with brown texta.
